GEMMA GREEN

An abstracted view of our environment, specifically from an aerial perspective forms the basis of my work; with Google maps being a key reference. Agricultural patterns within the structure of the land are significant, as I create images by selectively replicating lines and patterns within the landscape.

Selectivity is a further deliberation within my work, as the inclusion and exclusion of information occurs

through the process of creating maps. Denis Wood commented in the book The Power of Maps:

‘The maps’ effectiveness is a consequence of selectivity.'

This led me to consider how maps do not incorporate every factor of the land, meaning we are receiving a limited impression. As a result my work attempts to draw on the fact that maps are created selectively, in order to create an abstracted view of my chosen area. By excluding factors through selectivity, my work enhances the distortion between the actual (the environment we walk amongst) and the replication of the actual (the map). This is so that people will recognise that maps are reproduction of the land and therefore do not give a true representation of the environment we inhabit. Through looking at maps I have also began to draw upon the history of the land and comment upon how it has changed. My use of materials and process of creation will attempt to represent historical contexts which are based on research.
