NICHOLA PIERPOINT

I’ve always preferred 2D work, with my preferred medium being biro. I’ve never understood why, I just feel a level of freedom I don’t find with other drawing media. An issue I’ve always had is never being satisfied with my work, if I can rub it out and re-do it, I will. Biro takes this away forcing me to continue, unlike with media like charcoal and graphite.

However, recently I’ve been trying to branch out a little, trying out new media and techniques that challenge me and my current skills and force me to adapt and venture out of my comfort zone. Some examples of this are using marbling and brusho inks, as well as melting wax crayons; which I use to create a basic structure, and then  work into it using pens, pencils, paints and threads to add finer details. I also explore paper art. Although this may not sound like much of a difference, as someone that has always picked their media on the level of control they give you, this is probably as far in the opposite direction as you can get, giving you very little control over how it turns out; it takes on a life of its own and does what it wants.

As an artist, I’ve found inspiration from Minjae Lee. I really like the way that he mixes together various 2D media in an ambiguous way to create colourful and intricate designs  around a central figure. The level of flawless blending of mixed-media in Lee's work is something I strive for in my own practice.
